The Wiccan Trinity
In the Wiccan religion we believe in more than one deity. But, exactly what is the central belief?
At the center of our religion is the "All". The Supreme Being who is the Creator of all that is. This being is so awesome that it is beyond our scope of understanding. We cannot even imagine what it looks like. So, we see the All in terms we can understand and identify with, a female and a male deity, based on our reproductive capabilities.
There are few species on our planet that do not need both sexes to reproduce. Ok, there is the flatworm that can reproduce from a segment of it's own body. But, this is the exception rather than the rule. Because of this we see what we understand...a female and a male deity that usually appears in human or human-like form.
In "Wicca: A Guide For The Solitary Practioner" Cunningham gives us his concept od the Wiccan creation story:
Before Time Was
Before time was, there was The One, The One was all, and all was The One.
And the vast expanse known as the Universe was The One, all-wise, all-pervading, all-powerful, eternally changing. (1)
And space moved. The One molded energy into twin forms, equal but opposite, fashioning the Goddess and God from The One and of The One. (2)
The Goddess and God stretched and gave thanks to The One, but darkness surrounded them. They were alone, solitary, save for The One.
So They formed energy into gasses and gasses into suns and planets and moons. They sprinkled the Universe with whirling globes and so all was given shape by the hands of the Goddess and God. (3)
Light arose and the sky was illuminated by a billion suns. And the Goddess and God, satisfied by their works, rejoiced and loved, and were one.
From their union sprang the seeds of all life, and of the human race, so that we might achieve incarnation upon the Earth. (4)
The Goddess chose the Moon as Her symbol, and the God the Sun as His symbol, to remind the inhabitants of Earth of their fashioners. (5)
All are born, live, die and are reborn beneath the Sun and Moon, all things come to pass there under, and all occurs with the blessings of The One, as has been the way of existence before time was. (6)
Here is how I interpret the story:
(1) Here we see just how all encompassing and powerful the All is. A deity is all that exists.
(2) The All creates the Lady and the Lord from and of Himself. To me he has a dual reason for doing this. First He is alone and no one whether they are a deity or a person chooses to live their lives in utter solitude. (Or at least not most beings.)
Secondly the creation of the female and male deities sets the precedent for the order of the Universe: Balance.
(3) Again the theme of not wishing to be alone comes into play. Here the Divine Couple set the planets and stars in the darkness of space so that They are not alone. Here we also see that everything They create is made from Themselves. All we see in the night sky contains a spark of Their Divine Essence.
(4) From the joining of the Divine Couple is created humankind. We, too, have a spark of Their Divine Essence within us. We are part of Them and They are part of us.
(5 -6) In Their Divine understanding They aligned Themselves with the two most visible bosies in the vast ocean of space that surrounds us. They knew that humankind needed to know that They are always with us. We are never alone.
This is simply my way of understanding of this story, you may not agree with me and that is alright. Each of us must choose and form our own spiritual path. Read the story and meditate on it, you will develop your own understanding.
